Case Study
What is ExxonMobil?
ExxonMobil is a multi billion dollar company that creates profit from extracting natural resources, these are oil and natural gas. ExxonMobil operates in over 3 continents including North America. ExxonMobil produces a large annual revenue of 268.9 billion USD, ExxonMobil dropped drastically due to a scandal in 1986. ExxonMobil has been open for unofficaly and officaly for 125 years.
What Resources do they use?
How they use the land?
ExxonMobil includes input and risk assessments when choosing sites and land use, with the purpose of reducing risks and minimizing cost and schedule impacts. Prior consultation should be conducted when the temporary or permanent use of land for exploration, development, or production purposes has the potential to impact individuals, households or entire communities. Land access and acquisition, resettlement (avoidance of), compensation, and cash management is done in a fair and transparent manner following ExxonMobil’s Upstream Land Use Standards. |
Oil rig: steel, drilling equipment, workers etc.
Advances in technology have let ExxonMobil to produce offshore oil and gas deposits in water depths that was impossible to be made a generation ago. More than 3.1 billion oil-equivalent barrels are added on average per year over the past five years. Drilling engineers are needed to also use drilling rigs efficiently and safely. Drilling rigs are massive structures holding equipment used to drill water wells, oil wells, or natural gas extraction wells. Drilling rigs are used for testing sub-surface mineral deposits, soil properties, and also can be used to install sub-surface fabrications, such as underground utilities which are a must for engineers to work there, and tunnels to get to the minerals/rock,or even wells. Many of the drilling equipment which is needed for oil extraction are crown blocks, which is a section of block consisting of pulleys situated at the apex (known as the highest point) of the mining rig, traveling blocks which can freely move and contain a set of pulleys through the drill line which is located under the crown block, sand pipes, engine, fuel or water tanks, swivel (known as a fastening device), rotary hose, a turntable which is known as a circular revolving platform for turning a locomotive or vehicle, pipe rack, conductor pipe which gives stability to the whole system, drill pipes which are mainly used on drilling rigs, mud pit and mud pump AKA a reciprocating plunger device designed to circulate drilling fluid under high pressure down the drill string and back up the annulus. (a ring-shaped object, structure, or region.) |
Natural Gas
How is Natural Gas Extracted?
Natural gas is found near oil deposits, Exxonmobil uses seismic imagery to locate and explore natural gas. Seismic imagery is a tool that locates natural gas and crude oil by the bouncing sound waves of possible resource formations. After being located the natural gas is extruded using fracking, fracking is also known as “Hydraulic Fracturing”, and it is when a mixture of sand, gravel, and chemicals is used to extract natural gas. This chemical liquid is injected into a fissure. The fissure is then forcefully opened, and allows the natural gas to be released and be stored into wells. It is then ready to transfer, produce, refine, etc. |

Paper The common method of creating paper starts of with separating ligin(natural glue) from the cellulose fibers(from raw wood). To make whiter paper, sometimes paper makers might mix bleach to whiten the cellulose fibers. Once the cellulose is removed, a huge machine sprays it into mesh screens to turn the cellulose into mats. Then they dry out the cellulose mats, and then the mats are run through a heated rollers which make sure no water is left and squeezes the cellulose into paper. Then one huge roll of paper is produced(up to 30 feet wide). |
Oil
ExxonMobil history:
ExxonMobil is a company that has been around for a long period of time, their website claims that they have been open for over 125 years(unofficially and officially) Exxonmobil has many dates but it all starts in 1859. Edwin Drake and Uncle Billy Smith drill the first successful oil well in Titusville, Pennsylvania. In 1903 the wright brothers use mobiloil for their flight. In 1952, Jersey standard introduces Uniflo oil(multigrade motor oil). In 1995, exxon starts to help the environment and participate in the save the tiger fund. In 2002, exxon goes on even forward with saving the environment and initiate the GCEP which is a project working to meet energy demand and reducing greenhouse gases at the same time. In 2011 which is their last landmark in history to date, exxon discovered two major oil deposits in the gulf of mexico. This where the disastrous oil spill occurred. |
